Your Hosts

Allan Barnard and Julien Debray bought the former Arts Inn in 2002 and set about creating a Swartland icon.  For almost a decade, this dynamic two-man team has built a steady base of supremely loyal clients, many of whom have become firm friends.

Allan

Allan is a well-known radio personality in  the Western Cape, having presented various popular drive shows on two of Cape Town’s most listened-to music radio stations: Good Hope FM and Kfm over a period of almost twenty years.  His voice is still heard on radio every Saturday and Sunday morning between 10am and 1pm when he presents a Golden Oldie music show on 567 CapeTalk (on AM) and simultaneously on 702 in Johannesburg (on 92.7 FM).  His knack of choosing the right music for the right moment is legendary and is reflected in the consistently excellent choice of background music in the bistro.  Allan’s big passion is travelling and he claims this to be the best possible training he could have received for the hospitality industry.  His braaiing skills are the envy of his friends.

Julien

Julien came to South Africa as an young backpacker in the late 80′s.  Upon returning to France, he kept his links with South Africa by importing swimming pool equipment before eventually settling in Cape Town in 1999.  Julien likes to experiment with South African ingredients and his venison terrine is one of his signature dishes.  His big dream is to brew his own Weiss beer and in the process, give SAB-Miller a run for their money.  He has a rescue dog called Maya who is utterly devoted to him.  Upon your arrival for lunch or dinner, he’ll more than likely be the guy offering the Kir. Julien’s taste for slightly moist biltong borders on addiction.

Both these gentlemen love a good party and are known amongst their friends and guests as always being the perfect hosts.
